Not all genetic testing is created equal.
Some companies offer whole genome sequencing, delivering thousands or even millions of genetic variants. At MyHappyGenes®, we take a very different approach. We analyze 647 carefully selected genes, and that choice is entirely intentional.
In a recent Q&A, Dr. J Dunn, founder of MyHappyGenes® and a functional medicine practitioner with over 30 years of clinical experience, explains exactly why we test the genes we do, and just as importantly, why we don’t test everything.
Why More Genetic Data Isn’t Always Better
Whole genome sequencing sounds impressive, but more data does not automatically mean more clarity.
In fact, for many people, it creates the opposite: confusion, anxiety, and information overload. When you receive pages of genetic variants with no explanation, no context, and no guidance, you’re left asking one question:
What am I supposed to do with this?
At MyHappyGenes®, we believe genetic testing should lead to action, not overwhelm.
Our 3 Non-Negotiable Criteria for Gene Selection
Before any gene is included in a MyHappyGenes® report, it must meet three strict criteria.
1. The Gene Must Be Well-Studied
We only include genes that are supported by solid, peer-reviewed research. If the science is weak, inconsistent, or speculative, the gene doesn’t make the cut.
2. The Gene Must Fit Into a Known Biochemical Pathway
Every gene we test plays a role in a biochemical pathway we understand, such as neurotransmitter production, energy metabolism, detoxification, inflammation, or hormone balance.
If a gene can’t be placed into a clear, functional pathway, it doesn’t belong in a clinical report.
3. The Gene Must Be Clinically Actionable
This is the most important requirement.
If there is no known cofactor, nutrient, lifestyle change, or intervention that can support the gene’s function, we do not test it.
Dr. J is very clear about this philosophy:
“If we can’t do something about a genetic variant, we don’t test for it. Period.”
Because what’s the value of learning you have a genetic issue if there’s nothing you can do about it?
Why Some ‘Important’ Genes Don’t Make the Cut
There are genes that appear important on paper but fail one of our criteria. Some may be poorly understood. Others may not have actionable interventions. And some may not meaningfully impact day-to-day health.
Rather than overwhelming you with data that leads nowhere, we focus only on genes that help you understand how your body actually functions and how to support it.
That means no fear-based results.
No “sucks to be you” moments.
No raw data dumps without guidance.
What Makes the MyHappyGenes® Approach Different
Every gene in your MyHappyGenes® report is included because:
- It is well-researched
- It fits into a known biochemical pathway
- It has cofactors we can work with clinically
- It has a real impact on how you feel, think, and function
This allows us to go beyond identification and into personalized support, whether that’s nutrition, supplementation, lifestyle adjustments, or practitioner-guided protocols.
The Role of Biochemical Pathway Mapping
One of the most powerful aspects of the MyHappyGenes® system is our biochemical pathway maps.
Instead of looking at genes in isolation, we look at how they interact, how one variant affects another, and how that cascade influences mood, energy, immunity, detoxification, and more.
This is why we don’t believe in “one gene, one supplement.” Health is systems-based, and genetics must be interpreted the same way.
The Bottom Line
Genetic testing should be useful, not intimidating.
At MyHappyGenes®, we test only the genes that matter, the ones you can actually work with, so your results lead to understanding, clarity, and meaningful change.
If there’s no intervention, we don’t include the gene.
If there’s no pathway, we don’t include the gene.
If there’s no benefit to your real-world health, we don’t include the gene.
