Is Being a “Caretaker” in Your Genes?

If you're always the one people lean on, the one who cannot say no, who ends up exhausted from taking care of everyone else, you might think it is just your personality or how you were raised.

But there may be another piece to this story: your genes.

Is Empathy Genetic?

Yes, research suggests empathy has a genetic component.

Variations in the OXTR gene, which affects how your body responds to oxytocin (often called the “love hormone” or “bonding hormone”), can influence how sensitive you are to other people’s emotions.

People with certain OXTR variants tend to absorb others’ emotional states almost involuntarily, making them naturally more attuned — and more prone to taking on other people’s burdens.

The Hormones Behind the “Always On” Caretaker

Oxytocin plays a major role in bonding, nurturing, and connection. It is released when we hug someone and in large amounts during childbirth, which helps explain why women, on average, tend to have higher oxytocin levels and take on more of the caretaking role.

Testosterone works in the opposite direction: the higher the testosterone, the lower oxytocin tends to be.

As we age, this naturally shifts. Women often experience rising testosterone and decreasing oxytocin, which may contribute to better boundaries later in life. Men often experience the reverse, becoming more empathetic as they get older.

It Is Not Just Oxytocin

A few other genetic variants may also play into the caretaker pattern:

DRD4 (Dopamine Receptor)

This gene is linked to a strong sense of satisfaction tied to relationships. When the people you love are struggling, your brain may register it almost as if it is happening to you, and helping them can create a dopamine “reward.”

MAO Gene (Serotonin and Dopamine Regulation)

For many people, helping, fixing, or soothing someone else delivers a neurochemical payoff.

This may be especially common in men, who are often wired to “fix” rather than simply listen, which may explain why some people jump straight to solutions instead of offering support first.

COMT Gene

This gene affects how quickly your body clears stress hormones like adrenaline.

With certain variants, emotional experiences and disappointments may linger longer, which can make the idea of someone being upset with you feel like a real threat rather than simply an uncomfortable moment.

Why This Matters: It Is Biology, Not a Character Flaw

Here is the most important takeaway: if boundary-setting feels genuinely hard — or even threatening — that is not necessarily a personal failing.

From an evolutionary standpoint, humans are wired for connection because, historically, isolation meant danger. When you set a boundary and someone reacts negatively, it can trigger a real stress response in the body, especially if you carry certain genetic variants.

Genes Load the Gun, but You Hold the Trigger

The point of understanding your genetic wiring is not to feel stuck. It is the opposite.

When you understand why you are wired this way, it becomes easier to stop blaming yourself and start making small, supportive changes:

  • Prioritizing sleep and rest
  • Spending time outdoors
  • Supporting your COMT and MAO pathways with the right nutrients
  • Practicing boundary-setting as a skill, with patience for yourself

Setting boundaries is not selfish.

If the people around you have been relying on you too heavily, giving yourself room to rest may actually help them, too. An exhausted caretaker cannot show up fully when it truly counts.

Genes, Environment, and Everything In Between

Genetics is only part of the picture.

Upbringing matters too. People who grow up in high-stress households, for example, often develop strong caretaking tendencies.

But this does not mean it is “just” environment or “just” genetics. More often, it is both, working together.
