Frequently Asked Questions

How long will It take to get my results?

It will take 3-5 weeks from the time the lab receives your sample until the results are deposited into your account and your reports are available.

How do I access my raw data?

Once you get your DNA tested by MyHappyGenes, your results will be sent to your account, and you will receive an email letting you know they are ready.  You can download your raw data from there if you'd like, but there is no need to do that.  Our software will automatically analyze the data and renew your reports from that data whenever you choose to look at your reports.

Why don't you use 23andMe and/or AncestryDNA?

We used to use their DNA raw data for our reports, but found they were missing many of the gene variants we need for accurate reporting. We use the Illumina Global Screening Array v3, one of the most comprehensive genotyping platforms available, which interrogates hundreds of thousands of genetic positions, far more than consumer platforms like 23andMe or AncestryDNA are designed to cover.

How are my genes related to my mood?

Certain genetic variants have shown to be associated with how the body makes or breaks down neurotransmitters. These show a strong correlation with brain chemistry and/or mood in genome wide association studies. (GWAS). In other cases, we look at how well you absorb certain nutrients that are critical for making neurotransmitters.

Do my genes change over time?

No, your genes remain the same; the expression of your genes does change with diet, lifestyle, emotional events and supplementation.

How accurate is your testing?

The lab that analyses your sample uses Illumina's Infinium technology, which is the leading microarray used for SNP genotyping. The specific microarray we use is the Global Screening Array version 3 (GSA v3), which combines worldwide genomic data, clinical research variants, and quality control markers. According to Illumina's published specifications, the GSA v3 achieves 99.9% accuracy and 99.99% reproducibility. It is important to note that call rate (how many positions are successfully read) and reproducibility (how accurate those reads are) are separate measures, and that individual call rates will vary based on sample quality. This array has been widely adopted for research use and has been a standard for many research projects.

Should I get my genes tested again?

No, your genes will not change. There is no need for further testing unless the testing service offers to test more genes. However, if you are working with a practitioner, you can retake the questionnaire and get a new supplement recommendation report.

Do you have additional questions?

If you did not find the answer to one of your questions, please contact us (using the contact form below), and we're more than happy to answer!

How do I find a practitioner to work with?

We have a referral list available of practitioners.  It is growing.  If you don't see someone in your area, let us know and we will reach out to our expanded list of health care providers and see if there is a fit for you. Please remember to call the practitioner first and see if they are a good fit for your needs.  We are not affiliated with these practitioners, and we cannot guarantee the results.

What is your refund policy?

If you have opened and used the kit (swabbed your cheeks), no refunds will be given. To be eligible for a refund for an unused kit, you must notify MyHappyGenes® within thirty (30) days of placing your order through their website. You must confirm that you have not yet shipped your saliva sample to their laboratory. Additionally, the box containing the kit must be unopened and in good condition. For International return/refunds: The same information above applies. Additionally, we do not cover shipping in either direction currently for these orders. Please note that if you purchased your kit through a practitioner or at a conference or event, different refund policies may apply, you will need to check with the respective source for their refund policy, as we do not refund for orders that were not placed directly on our website.Refunds provided under this policy will be issued to the same credit card used for the purchase (minus a $25 restocking fee) and will be processed within 21 business days of confirmation by the MyHappyGenes® Customer Care team that the refund conditions have been met.

Can I delete my data from your server?

Yes, you can delete your personal data at any time.

I bought my kit through my practitioner, but didn’t remember to register it before mailing it in.

If you bought the DNA kit from your practitioner, reach out to them to see if they recorded the MHG DNA kit number you purchased from them. We may be able to help, so tell the practitioner to email us if they can’t find it. If this is not successful, we have reached a dead end. You’ll need to purchase a new kit. There is a $175/kit fee to receive new MHG DNA kits.

Can I see a list of genes that are tested by MHG?

Yes! To see the genes we test download the sample reports by clicking on the tab at the top of the page that says "sample Reports"

Is there a charge for the extra reports?

The 3 practitioner-only reports, Your Health Assessment, Biochemical Pathways Analysis, Personalized Supplement Recommendations, are available when you work with a practitioner for $199. (Practitioner fees not included). You can read about these reports on our Kit and Reports page on our website. We can help you find a practitioner if you are interested.

Why do I have to work with a practitioner to get the extra reports?

We want to make sure you are supported in your health journey by a licensed health care provider as you implement diet, lifestyle and supplements. They can have a profound effect on your physiology. We also want to make sure there are no contraindications to other medications or supplements you are already taking.

How do I replace a lost/ damaged/ contaminated MHG DNA Kit?

If you haven't sent the sample to the lab, but you lost your kit, or you somehow damaged it or contaminated the swab, there is a fee of $45/kit. Please send an email to [email protected] and let us know. Include your name and the order number.

What do I do if I forgot to register my kit before mailing it in?

Do you still have the MHG DNA box? Yes? Phew! The code is on the box, and you can go ahead and register your kit now.

What do I do if I didn’t register my kit but I threw away the box?

If you bought a DNA kit from our website, you can email us with your name and order number and we will look up your MHG DNA kit number. If we are able to find your kit #, you can register the kit then.

I notice there are 2 different prices for replacing kits. What’s the difference?

If the kit or swab was damaged or lost so therefore it did not get to the lab for processing it is $45. This is replacement for the kit and has nothing to do with the lab fees we pay.
If you didn’t register your kit for any reason but you sent it to the lab for processing, we will pay that processing fee regardless of whether you get results. Therefore, you will have to buy a new kit. The cost is $175.

How do you protect my data?

To get information on how we protect your data, read more about How We Protect Your DNA Privacy.

Can I upload my entire genome?

The entire genome would overwhelm our system and since we test for only certain variants, the ones not tested for would not register in our software program so no results are possible.

We bought multiple kits and didn’t remember to write down who used what kit. Now what?

In this case, we are sorry, but we have no way of knowing who used which kit and you’ll need to start over. There is a $175/kit fee to receive new MHG DNA kits.

Do I get my full genetic data, or just the variants covered in my reports?

Yes. Your MyHappyGenes® reports focus on a curated set of 600+ genes most relevant to your health, but that's not all the data you have access to. We also provide your complete raw genotype file, containing every SNP the lab delivers (approximately 637,000), not just the variants featured in your reports.

If I delete my account, is my genetic data actually gone?

Yes. When you delete your account, we permanently remove your raw DNA file, your SNP results, and your reports from our systems. We do not retain a de-identified copy of your genetic data. The only thing that remains is an anonymized order record, which contains no genetic information at all.
