If you have this gene will you get cancer?

“You have cancer” is a phrase no one ever wants to hear.

Women fear breast cancer more than heart disease yet heart disease takes many more lives each year.

One of the questions we frequently get is, “Can genetic tests, like the MyHappyGenes® test, tell me if I’ve got a cancer gene?”

So we took to the mic to give you an answer. Watch the video here.

The simple answer is No, but that’s not the end of the story. Cancer is not a product of just one gene. Like every other condition, good or bad, cancer is the result of gene variations plus environmental factors turning them on.

Speaking of breast cancer, here’s something you may not know. “Every human has both the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Despite what their names might suggest, BRCA genes do not cause breast cancer. In fact, these genes normally play a big role in preventing breast cancer. They help repair DNA breaks that can lead to cancer and the uncontrolled growth of tumors. Because of this, the BRCA genes are known as tumor suppressor genes.

However, in some people, these tumor suppression genes do not work properly. When a gene becomes altered or broken, it doesn’t function correctly. This is called a gene mutation.” (From The National Breast Cancer Foundation)

What the MyHappyGenes® test can tell you what your level of risk is for certain types of cancer and how to work with your body’s biochemistry and lifestyle to turn off those genes and turn on the ones that will prevent it from happening.
